“We make a place where people continually thrive, believe in their own potential, and build a life worth living.”
Our Mission
Why Atman?
Atman is the Sanskrit word for the indwelling God at the core of every person. To know yourself is to become reacquainted with your own Atman.
Not the roles we play or the stories we carry, but what remains when all of that falls away. Everyone who walks through our door carries their Atman within them, whole, worthy, and luminous. Our work is simply to create the conditions for that light to find its way back.
Built for the whole of recovery.
Stable housing paired with coordinated care, life skills, and creative work, so residents have what they need to move forward.
The Healing Table
Twice a week, residents gather around one table for group work guided by Patrick's Foundation, drawing on more than fifteen years of recovery experience. Writing, gratitude, and honest reflection, with no pressure to perform. Paired with life skills and creative programming, it gives people a place to rebuild alongside others on the same path.

Recuperative Care
Short-term residential recovery with coordinated medical follow-up. Medi-Cal and Partnership Health Plan accepted.
Monitored Recovery Home
A safe, structured, substance free home with house manager oversight and community accountability.

Housing Navigation
Individualized help securing permanent housing, landlord advocacy, and follow up.

Creative Programming
Art workshops and hands on creative experiences that support expression in recovery.

Case Management
One on one coordination of benefits, transportation, and medical appointments.

Life Skills
Financial literacy, job readiness, healthy communication, and self care.

The principles behind the work.
Five commitments shape every conversation, every house meeting, and every plan we build alongside a resident.
Dignity
Everyone arrives whole, never a diagnosis or a record. We meet residents with the respect we would want for our own family.
Structure
Clear expectations and written agreements give residents something steady to stand on while they rebuild.
Community
Shared meals, house meetings, and honest conversation give residents a place to belong while they do the hard work.
Honesty
We ask for honesty and answer without judgment. Setbacks are part of recovery, met with safety first and a clear way forward.
Independence
Atman House is a step, not a destination. From day one, the work points toward stable housing and a life carried on one's own.
A clear path from arrival to independence.
Three phases over four to six months. Structure stays steady while autonomy grows, so residents and referral partners always know what comes next.

A Historic Victorian,
Made for Belonging
Atman House is a circa 1880 Gold Rush era Victorian in Grass Valley. Once a beloved bed and breakfast, it is now a warm, healing home for adults in recovery.
Each room reflects the character of the original home, restored with care so residents feel settled from the first day.
A higher standard for what recovery can be.
Most programs aim to keep people stable. Atman House aims further, toward a life worth building. The structure, the creativity, and the community all work toward the same end, helping each resident return to the part of themselves that was never broken.
